Always forget how much tulips grow overnight.

Hi! 👋🏼

Mornin’!

Pretending it’s fall over here.

Those dark cymbidiums. 🖤

Bigger than your face anthurium.

Such a love hate relationship with cafes. I rarely buy or use them because if their temperament (particularly in LA weather) but once in a while I’ll see a bunch I can’t resist.

Revisited this arrangement while speaking to a client about a branded event. Love the soft yet masculine feel of these simplistic beauties.

Not quite a labor-less weekend over here - Southern CA wedding season is in full swing! Hope all my industry folks at least take Monday off to relax and kick your feet up. You deserve it!

Need to set up a spot to photograph in the new studio. In the meantime I’m getting a good left arm workout with the single arm gram.

💗

Georgie photobomb. 🖤

Sometimes you decide to do hotel installs alone because you forget how much of a pain in the butt they can be in DTLA and you’re hauling stuff from down the street because there isn’t a loading dock and waiting 20 minutes for the 1 service elevator for the entire hotel and it’s 90 something degrees so both you and the flowers are unhappy and you think ‘Wait, why didn’t I bring an assistant?’ and you forget to take photos of the really pretty arrangements you made so you post this you took at the studio instead and sit back to relax after a long few days of work and chuckle when you remember that some people think this job is ‘easy’ because for the most part I feel like I’m just sweating and moving stuff around as a florist. 🤪

Summer bounty.

My grandmother’s zinnia game is strong. I told her to save me some of the seeds from the peachy ones. 🍑

The Twig & Twine spread from @akikotsujiart book “Vase and Flower”. Such a fun collaboration between a ceramicist and 9 different florists! In good company with @jgdn, @doan_ly, @studiomondine, @meryl_valerie_florals, @841_chan, @greengardann, @louise_worner, and @gemfleuriste.

There’s a cute little feature about my new studio up on the @society6 blog. Big thanks to @ashley_tibbits for the lovely text and @carmenchan for photos that make this camera shy florist shine.

I spy with my little eye....key limes!!!

🌿

Bits & pieces.

Also, anyone know what those mini foxglove looking things are? I’m calling them fairy foxglove. They are so cute.

Maybe it’s the time of year but pincushion protea are basically flower fireworks.

Intimate backyard dinner parties are the best.

The best of summer for a 95th birthday. 🎂

Summer officially arrived last weekend. Hope you all survived the heat wave!

🍡

Happy weekend!

Baby shower vibes today with @meinschatzevents and @whoanellycaters.

Just had to show you that peony.

Double D’s back in season. #dinnerplatedahlia

June gloom mood lighting on this soft lady.

Spent more time here than any other place over the last 5 years of my life. Flower shop ownership is quite a hustle. I’m happy to say it was a successful endeavor monetarily and for my business in general but I’ve been enjoying a less work filled life and am excited about settling into my new little Highland Park studio. Bye little flower shop on Virgil Street...you will be missed. 😘

Tis the season. #peonies

Palette play.

Those shadows though.

Hope you all have a mauvelous day! (sorry, had to 🙊)

Should be packing up the studio but doing this instead....because I ALWAYS overbuy astrantia.

Dreamy babes.

Waiting for those peonies to pop.💥

Working our little butts off over here making mamas happy. 💕

This one put ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home’ in my head.

Been thinking a lot about how there are so many design based workshops/tutorials/talks but not very much focus is put on the business side of floral design. To me, both aspects are equally as important if you want to build a solid and lasting business. Sure, floral design can be creative and fun but profitability is still essential and should be an integral part of any business. I see a pretty big disconnect between the larger funded companies that have commodified flowers, typically through an online format, and the smaller designers that consider themselves more of an artisan. In my perfect flower world everyone would care about both design and the business side/profitability to elevate the industry as a whole. I would love to see us all practice standard industry mark-ups, collecting/paying correct sales tax for services, legally and ethically paying staff (freelance vs employee), educating clients why the cost of floral services is so high at times, etc, etc, etc. 💛💛💛

Playing in the studio this morn. These peonies are one of my faves. 😍

Spring!

Another from @theingenuemagazine with photographer @annabelmehran.

So excited to see these photos of @haimtheband for their feature in @theingenuemagazine! Such a solid all female crew on set that day. Big thanks to the lovely photographer @annabelmehran for bringing me on as the floral/prop stylist.

Lilac season.💜

A week full of pretty bridal bouquets. 🍑

POW!

Moonlighting in the art department today with the talented @amy.lipnis to create a faux wedding. Views weren’t too shabby.

I’m really enjoying working alone in a quiet studio lately. It’s been years since I’ve been able to design without interruption.

These roses are a new fav. 💕

I love when work projects call for a nursery trip.

More jasmine please.

Last week at the shop. Whipping up bouquets for some of the regulars. Feeling very bittersweet. I’ll miss you guys. 💛

Flashing back to this babe of a bouquet from last year. How about those tree peonies- hubba hubba.

Cranking out deliveries today.

Ghostly coral charms. 😱

Endless thank yous for all of your kind words and support yesterday. Sending lots of flower love to everyone. 😘😘😘

In October of 2013 I went out on a limb with my business by opening a brick & mortar flower/gift shop. It has been exciting, exhausting, fun, challenging, rewarding, frustrating, weird, awful, successful, and many, many other things. I’ve met a lot of wonderful customers, have had a great crew of women assist me at the shop whom I owe endless thank yous & hugs to, have connected with like minded business owners, watched customers’ children grow, made lifelong friends with other vendors, have learned a ton about myself & running a business, have cried, have had way too many sleepless nights & 5am alarms, have answered every damn email that has come through Twig & Twine’s inbox, have swore at CA for making small business ownership so hard, have felt like I accomplished a lot and now, finally....have recognized it’s time for change. Today I am all over the map with emotions while I announce the shop’s closure. It’s been a good 4 years plus run on gritty Virgil Street and I will miss this endeavor oh so much but I’m also excited about the future.
The last official day Twig & Twine will be open as a retail shop is Sunday, 3/25/18. But don’t worry...TWIG & TWINE WILL CONTINUE TO FUNCTION AS A STUDIO BASED FLORIST with services for events, weddings, floral styling, holiday pop-ups, private classes, etc so please keep us in mind for any future floral needs. We are here to assist!
Our current shop inventory is marked down dramatically so pop on in to to say hello/goodbye and help clear everything out. We will also be having fun pop-up style events over the next few months (including this weekend!) so stay tuned for announcements. Additionally, the shop will re-open for regular floral services on Mother’s Day weekend....can’t let those mamas go without beautiful blooms!

I thank each and every one of you for being a customer and for supporting local small business. I’m so grateful for being able to be a part of the local Silver Lake community and to have had ‘shop owner’ as part of my life journey. I couldn’t have done it without you all.
Big hugs & love,
Heather
